The rats were running full tilt towards the lake with the potion spray being flung around by the spiders as they passed the toadstools. The spiders noticed something grasping the stalks but couldn't quite make out what they were seeing...
The science bit...
Spiders usually have some eyes on top of their head and some more in front. With so many eyes, it’s a bit surprising that they usually don’t have good eyesight. Instead, they probably just see light and dark shapes moving around. When they’re hunting they make up for that bad eyesight with an excellent ability to sense vibration and taste.

Unfortunately the first two spiders were eaten by something feathery before they could wipe potion over their eyes. Suddenly everything came into focus and they saw the first of the Bluebird Riders! Oh My! If they could do something to prevent the bluebirds eating the messengers then perhaps they stood a chance to finally be able to protect the Dust Bunnies.
Sam, the last spider alive twisted so his web was dipped in the potion .. he then threw his web over the head of the bluebird. This gave him enough time to explain what was happening back at the house. For a truce to be discussed before the bluebird used his mechanical claw to remove the web from his head and to lift Sam off the back of the rat and............. thank goodness for Leigh's popcorn. The rat started throwing pawfulls of wonderful sticky popcorn into the air and sat back on his haunches to watch the bluebird in flight catching the sweet stuff before it hit the ground. The rat looked around for Sam but he was nowhere to be found so he carried on running towards the lake. What looked like a tattoo on his bum was actually Sam. Ooops...
