Caroline's brother Sammy heard all the commotion from inside the drains. He had been pushing and squeezing his way through the pipes and the bits of Penny and Claire until he could struggle through the plughole. He squeezed and pushed and POP! he shot out with the chain around one arm and his ghost beacons swirling and flashing a sickly green in the dim light of the bathroom. Three ghosts came with him, they were the ones that should have stayed in the sewer. They weren't scented at all so I suppose that was one good thing. Sammy trundled his way through the bathroom and across the landing with the ghosts following closely. Mary was holding the banister when each ghost passed straight through her... eawwww that type of feeling needed warming up. She saw Viki heading towards the pantry and wondered if there was any wine left... just something to take the edge off. After all, as you all know, after a ghost (never mind 3 ghosts) have wandered right through a person without so much as a bye your leave something has to be done to get you warm again.

Caroline tidied her tentacles and shined her goggles and gazed in wonder at the broken bath especially the stretched plughole. She carefully flicked at the newly created tunnel and eased herself forwards and slithered quite easily bit by bit into the darkness.

So sorry, my blog just can't cope with too much elderflower wine. I hope you all can read today's story and I will be trying again tomorrow.

Darren got to work in the garden. His keep net managed to sift through the stench leaving behind just a sparkle. All the nasty lumpy stuff was tipped into a bin for re-cycling (amazing how many bins we are given now-a-days for that very purpose) Rebecca and Mary were in the kitchen when they heard a bit of a clatter. They sent a spare rat wearing a hard hat out the back door to check the Health and Safety situation.  There was just a bit of scaffolding up with a creature and a clipboard and pencil on the outhouse steps. Just why Darren's work had to be certified.. in fact Darren was a bit insulted and gave his sparkle filled keep net a bit of a tug and a whispered command and it took on a life of it's own and gradually 'snaked' across the step and slowly and gently engulfed the creature, totally sparkled him and absorbed every part of him but his top hat.
Now that the couch had found somewhere else to dine Nan and Susan were able to gather a couple of chairs and blankets and full jam jars. They arranged themselves on the front porch all comfy and warm and waited to see what would happen. It's amazing how brave a jam jar of Elderflower wine can make someone... add a tin of home made ginger nuts and well....

Val had remembered the Elderflower wine left over from Christmas and had followed the trail of dusty footprints into the pantry. She immediately realised the danger and reached for the furniture polish which she bravely aimed in an arc between Bonnie and the Were Bunny and back again. This brought the situation to a complete halt. Everyone took a breath. Nan disentangled Bonnie.. Leigh found a feather duster and flicked away the web and Val had a sit down. Bravery really 'takes it out of a person' and the best thing to do is to have a rest in a pantry with friends and a couple of glasses of Elderflower wine.
Once everything was calm again the wine was being poured into rather jammy jam jars for the ladies and the corks were given to Bonnie and the Were Bunny to chew. The corks wouldn't be needed again and it would be considerably safer for the Dust Bunnies to get the wine from the corks instead of dripping any on themselves, after all, everyone remembered what happened last time they were given wine and Uncle Bob just turned into rather a tangled mess when he missed his mouth and the wine dripped down his front. In fact he became so unravelled that Auntie Tess tried to knit him together again and realised some bits of him were missing. She suspected that a youngling Dust Bunny had gathered up bits of Uncle Bob and with a bit of stretching managed to add the bits onto himself making him look more feral and quite attractive.

Nan stepped back hurriedly and threw what she thought was a toy away from her. The 'toy' immediately took flight  and, as it did so, it's wings gave a shudder and sprung into action. As Leigh hung out the window Nan had a few jelly beans for medicinal purposes.. beans would have to do until they could get the wine open.
As Cuddly rose into the darkening sky he was joined by some of his clan who had tracked him to the house. The beat of their copper wings made quite a down draft  which in turn caused the cushions on the monstrous couch to blow across the porch, down the steps and across the path. The couch lifted up it's fancy trim and flounced after them. The porch was now a safe zone or at least not quite so dangerous as before. Nan was able to get in by the front door and joined Leigh in the pantry watching out the window at the passing Wingeds. There were a couple of bottles of Elderflower wine on one of the shelves covered with dust and cobwebs and the ladies were just reaching for them when in walked one of the Were Dust Bunnies who shrieked out a warning before one of his cousins got crushed. Turns out... Bonnie D Bunny had been trapped in a web which had been spun across the bottles and she was screaming without making any sound hoping and making deals with whoever or whatever could help her in her hour of need.

Val and Nan had arrived safely at Val's B & B. They had one of the Christmas Special huge jar of jelly beans (On offer at Tesco's)  to give Darren as payment for cleaning the outside loo and surrounding area.. There had been a post it note in the Bestiary Book alongside the picture of a Devil Boy stating that they are ok with being paid in beans. After all... Jack sold his cow for a handful of beans and they weren't even the jelly ones so it had been a well known fact that in certain parts of the Country beans are legal tender.
The ladies helped with Darren's luggage. One gramophone, a box of stuff, old hat and an extra special fishing keep net. The sparkle from the net could not be hidden so they just let it shine - quite good really as it didn't need batteries and shone all the way back to the house.
As they reached the house they noticed the couch was still munching on some spare rats (just a snack) so they peeked round the back garden... the stinky cloud was still laying heavily on the browning grass. It was agreed that Darren and his keep net would start straight away making the back garden safe and the ladies would climb back through the pantry window with  the rest of his luggage.
Val climbed up first and Nan passed up the box then the gramophone and the hat then the cuddly toy. As she passed the last item to Val there was a shriek as the 'cuddly toy' turned it's head all the way round and smiled rather unpleasantly.

It had been fairly quiet by the back door. No one was venturing outside until the ladies returned with Darren. The scrit scrat scratching started off fairly quietly then suddenly sped up and became louder. One of the spiders had totally transformed and had been busy in the cellar strengthening his legs with cogs and studs. Septamus would never fit under a glass now or be sucked up one of those spider catchers.
Venom, gloopy and sticky dripped from his fangs as he scuttled across the floor. Sep looked towards the walls and shook his head. Humm... walls didn't seem such a good idea. He probably won't be able to drop onto unsuspecting folk from the ceiling but he could trip up any Things, Bumps and Moaners and his web was now extra strong and really quite flexible... now able to be fire around corners. Sep knew he would need a bit of training to be able to throw his web accurately so he started practising on any passing creatures. He did try to wrap his web around Rebecca but she was too quick for him and nimbly got out of the way.
The Were Dust Bunnies were beginning to flex their muscles and attempting to control the situation. A few had banded together.. bravely climbing up the vacuum cleaner pipe with some coins and clips. With a bit of a squeeze the smallest of them managed to get close to the motor and sabotaged the death machine! A cheer went up from the rest of her clan.

We needed postal rats to carry messages through the village this time towards the town. Sindy and Sandy brought their own rats with them handing over lists of do's and don'ts. Trouble is...Sindy's list actually argued with Sandy's and if things got out of hand we would end up with confetti. I don't think it helped at all that one of the rats had actually added a few 'do's' of her own. A bit obvious really with all the cakes topped with chicken feed for afternoon tea, angora fluff for their beds, no cats to be allowed anywhere near the house and all rat traps to be dismantled and made into back scratchers.
Sindy had tripped up over the unravelling bandages so Sandy gathered up the ends and tied a huge bow then turned around for Sindy to tie a bow for her. It was quite surprising just how many Dust Bunnies lived in amongst the bandages and they rolled out onto the floor. Unfortunately the spiders had crossed near where Sindy stood flicking potion around and when the Dust Bunnies were gathering, getting to know each other the transformation started taking place. We now have more than enough Were Dust Bunnies.

While Nan and Val were on their way to Val's house to collect Darren the ladies left back at the house set to with upcycling and frou frou. They knew Caroline was not a creature who would show her feminine side so while she was cleaning her suckers Mary and Susan (in a spare onesie.. looking very fetching) started collecting candles and pretty soaps and rugs and kind sentiments for the wall and a gorgeous chair and of course bubbles for her bath. Caroline looked up and was happy. Viki was able to 'go' everyone relaxed.
Penny and Claire came through the door. Claire was snapping her rubber gloves which seemed to create some tension in the air.  Mary and Susan looked at each other and with one raised eyebrow silent words passed between them and they grabbed hold of Viki and scarpered/bolted/legged it/ran very fast from the bathroom agreeing not to look back. Mary looked back.
Caroline was no longer looking happy. She flung out her tentacles grabbing hold of both Claire and Penny using their struggles to pull herself out of the bath and onto the rug which went skidding across the floor slamming into the dainty table which in turn tipped sending boiling hot tea over her new goggles and ear flaps. She screamed as the candles gutted and set the rug alight. Caroline was now between the nurses and the door and when they tried to leave the bathroom Caroline just gently pulled them apart placing the bits and pieces into the bath and swirling the bubbles sloshing them onto the floor putting out the fire.

We are going to need some help. We really can't enter or leave by the front door unless the couch has been fed and to leave by the back door is really not an option. The stink is practically visible.. sort of a yellowy greenish cloudy barrier. Viki had decided she didn't need 'to go' after seeing the bushes moving on such a still night. The Bestiary had been found. Leigh had been standing on it as she peered out the front window at the couch trying to warn visitors not to get too close. After a flick through the tattered old pages the ideal candidate was found. A Devil Boy. There was a note pinned to the page probably left from the last time the plumbing collapsed. Nan remembered there was one called Darren hanging around last Christmas when the couch kept burping... luckily she had given him egg nog and broken finger sandwiches so he should think kindly of us.  He was last seen looking for a B & B (Bed and Breakfast for non-Brits) and may have ended up round at Val's. We have run out of messenger rats, there are no spiders left (not such a bad thing really), the dust bunnies can't leave even in a breeze and we haven't seen any bats for ages. We needed Darren as soon as possible and we knew who would be brave enough for the task.
Val and Nan decided they would climb out the pantry window. Avoiding both the killer couch on the porch and the stinky outhouse by the back door they were dressed for action! Each wore a black and grey onesie, gloves and wellies and had face paint on to blend in with the surrounding countryside..

They were getting a bit short of nurses. Every time a new one was needed Claire's hand shot up but she was never chosen. Accidents happen don't they... if Patsy hadn't gone on Bloodbook and told everyone about the mix up in the potion then Claire may have been forgiven but No! Now she had to bide her time until she was needed. The cellar had been made ready and Claire waited. Then, Oh My!!! The bare light bulbs behaved like the light bulbs in films. Each went off in turn with a thud.. sounded like the Duff Duff moment in Eastenders.  Claire's new rubber gloves slipped out of her pockets and onto her hands in one fluid movement. She adjusted her light thingy (she never could remember the correct name) and she was ready.
No one knew if the rats had made it to the lake. There was certainly a lack of spiders now that everyone knew what had happened to Sam. Nan had been out collecting any unwanted Dust Bunnies.. didn't everyone know how valuable they are at keeping down the Things, Bumps, Fiends and those monsters which are just at the side of your peripheral vision..  Someone was going to have to check the back garden.. there were enough pegs for delicate noses (the scent of the outside loo had drifted in and was making everyone a bit twitchy) and someone had to be pushed out the back door. Viki needed 'to go' and would prefer to use a shrub therefore we will need a volunteer. ..

The rats were running full tilt towards the lake with the potion spray being flung around by the spiders as they passed the toadstools. The spiders noticed something grasping the stalks but couldn't quite make out what they were seeing...
The science bit...
Spiders usually have some eyes on top of their head and some more in front. With so many eyes, it’s a bit surprising that they usually don’t have good eyesight. Instead, they probably just see light and dark shapes moving around. When they’re hunting they make up for that bad eyesight with an excellent ability to sense vibration and taste.

Unfortunately the first two spiders were eaten by something feathery before they could wipe potion over their eyes. Suddenly everything came into focus and they saw the first of the Bluebird Riders! Oh My! If they could do something to prevent the bluebirds eating the messengers then perhaps they stood a chance to finally be able to protect the Dust Bunnies.
Sam, the last spider alive twisted so his web was dipped in the potion .. he then threw his web over the head of the bluebird. This gave him enough time to explain what was happening back at the house. For a truce to be discussed before the bluebird used his mechanical claw to remove the web from his head and to lift Sam off the back of the rat and............. thank goodness for Leigh's popcorn. The rat started throwing pawfulls of wonderful sticky popcorn into the air and sat back on his haunches to watch the bluebird in flight catching the sweet stuff before it hit the ground. The rat looked around for Sam but he was nowhere to be found so he carried on running towards the lake. What looked like a tattoo on his bum was actually Sam. Ooops...

Now we have Caroline with a very bad headache in the bathroom if anyone needs 'to go' you will have to visit the outside loo by the back door. Luckily Leigh and Mary escaped the bathroom.. all limbs intact leaving a trail of popcorn.
We are going to need postal rats... messages need to get to  the lakeside. The creatures there are experienced and brave. The Dust Bunnies themselves couldn't leave the house... they would be blown away like tumbleweed. The cellar rats agreed to go after finishing off the popcorn. This time they were going to leave by the back door, they had lost some of their family members to the velvet fiend by the front door and they weren't going to get caught out again. Some of the larger spiders rode the rats as they could shake off some of the droplets of potion more accurately.
Thing wasn't going to leave quietly. He found his way to the afterlife was blocked by something resembling cold porridge and really could we blame him for not wanting to oooze through it... he was now just a ghostly figure haunting the outside loo. As he died near a loo so he ended up stuck near one.
Lightening was crashing, illuminating  the cracked timber and peeling paintwork and Thing wasn't alone. Squee was there on the roof glaring cross eyed and trying to hold his nose against the stench (not a good look).

There is something so annoying when you have put on just a smidge of weight and it all goes on your tentacles  and you can no longer fit in the bath. Caroline was really not in a good mood. She wanted peace and quiet and instead was bombarded with shrieks and screams and even when Val offered to light some candles and to bring some wine her temper had not soothed. Mary found a shoehorn with a very long handle and together they tried to squish Caroline into the bath along with her bath toys. As one sticky tentacle was tucked in so another popped out... this did not bode well.
There was a squishy tapping on the door. The sort of tapping that someone might do with one hand and one soggy end. Caroline squealed a very ladylike 'Go away' but Thing really, really wanted to clean up his wound. With a lot of fuss he managed to get the Bathroom door open and ran past Val and Mary towards the sink almost passing the bath on the way. Almost but not quite. Caroline's front right tentacle shot forward, wrapping round Thing, lifting him off the floor.. hugging him too tightly each time he breathed out so he couldn't quite take a deep enough breath to keep living.
Val and Mary decided it was probably the right time to wander off, just slowly, not in any kind of hurry, just twelve more steps and they would be at the remains of the door frame.

I just read this out to my husband and he said. " Use a shovel to hit Caroline on her head. Because of the pain she will lift all her tentacles at once to soothe the pain. Then you just need to use the shovel again to scoop her up and place her in the bath" Job done.

We have a new lady... Viki could you remember to bring a shovel when you visit the house? And go round the back..don't, whatever you do, go to the front door and DON'T sit on the couch on the porch!

The Thing in the Cupboard complained a bit about the new latch on the door. How was the hinge supposed to creak menacingly when the latch had been well oiled and kept the door tightly closed. In fact he kept pushing against the inside of the door with so much force he split into three. He was quite surprised but just nodded his head at his new family members and after they had shaken the gunge off themselves and fluffed up their eyebrows all three started pushing the cupboard door steadily and with as much pressure as they could muster. As you well know, if you push as hard as you can sometimes you don't stop in time and Thing had pushed and his two 'offspring' had pushed and suddenly the door flew open grabbing Thing's arm at the same time as he was running through and... it was ripped off at the elbow spraying blood everywhere. He knew he would have to clean up the soggy end as it would create a trail easy to follow..easy enough for a Dust Bunny to find him.
Nan, who had helped so much last Halloween and of course at Creepmas must be contacted somehow. It was going to be risky as non of the creatures knew which side the ladies would take care of. A few of the ladies had already arrived, Val and Mary were talking about their own experiences with Squee's. Thing could hear them upstairs as he crept up the stairs  towards the bathroom. He was too far away to stop his buddy's opening the front door and leaning against the couch. The tassel's quivered in the slight breeze and the stench of rat filled their nostrils as items which had been lost down the back of the couch were thrown with great force. A few coins thrown at speed cut through the newbie Things burning through their bodies leaving holes which would never heal. The Things died without really living.

Fluff, who had taken over the position of Head Dust Bunny found his copy of the Bestiary which had been splashed with goo from the rampaging spiders. Everything was out of synch now with creatures growing or shrinking and inanimate objects taking on a life of their own. The book itself had grown in size but if he had some help he would still be able to search for information on how to defeat his enemies.
Squee couldn't hold on any longer.. Patrick Bump was pinging Squee's fingers off the ledge one by one. Unfortunately with the last couple of fingers Squee managed to hold onto Patrick and dragged him to his death... both of them landing on those comfy velvet cushions and vanishing into their depths.
As Penny couldn't cope with nursing the casualities it was decided to put a call out for extra staff. There were a few rats left and they crept through the one exit door not yet oiled.. the cat flap. They managed to creep past the couch but one extra sticky tassle hooked itself round the last rat and tugged and pulled and squeezed....

Val had arrived with Mary just a little too late to help our Joe but they followed the trail of popcorn upstairs being careful of the oil and the strange glistening spiders. Their shoulders tensing at the old remembered feelings...
Squeee who usually kept the other side of the window couldn't see why he couldn't come inside.. after all his claws could be just as shrill one side of the glass as the other. He was watching all the goings' on and wondered when to make a move. He spent some time filing a few of his finger nails so he could make the good old fashioned sound heard in classrooms as chalk squealed down the board. sometimes a teacher would use chalk and sometimes a Squeee. He wondered how many children realised that the chalk rubber thrown at their heads wasn't to stop them talking but to dislodge the Squeee as he crawled up an unsuspecting arm.
With a circular movement Squee managed to cut a hole in the glass large enough to squelch through without too much damage.. just losing a few suckers on the way. Once on the inside he knew he wouldn't be able to get back outside because of the fancy net curtain draped across the hole... the curtain kept sticking to his remaining suckers.
The killer couch out on the porch was recruited to give a warning of any undead uninvited creatures arriving. The Dust Bunnies were trying to gather their families. The younglings needed to be kept safe whilst the battle for the sleeping room took place. Suddenly there was a high pitched scream. Squee tried to hang onto the curtain as he was being pinched and pushed back through the hole and was dangling above the couch which opened it's cushions like a dusty velvet gin trap.

Gin traps were the mainstay of trapping for Gamekeepers, Farmers, Smallholders and Gardeners in the UK until the were banned in 1958. For many people interested in trapping history a good specimen of a Gin Trap is an essential part of their collection.
Just for the benefit of doubt, it is illegal to use all forms of Leg Hold Trap, (such as the Gin Trap) in the UK.

The nurse skittered to a stop beside the bowl which still had a quantity of mush available for testing. Joe had been reduced to nothing but bones. No-one was around to notice that Penny looked a bit like Chuckles (The Handy Creep) if you could see through the glamour. It wasn't only vampires who had that talent.
Anyway, Penny scooped up Joe's remains without dripping any on her shoes which just so happened to be the extra special Jim Chews she had been saving for... for ages. Now she had Joe's bones she could start saving for the Burntkin handbag to match. Oh dear.. her mind was wandering off on it's own again. Hopefully not too far, last time she had to pay to get it back again.
Catz (my scientist (yes really) friend) had already been building her lab in the cellar and was waiting for Penny to bring samples for testing. That potion from the were-rabbit was strange stuff and the instructions should have been followed.. but no.... those extra tomatoes just changed everything. As Penny was opening the cellar door (which didn't creak due to excessive oiling) the eye watering, squealing, shoulder twitching, sound-feeling was getting louder...

The Bump in the Nights remembered to take their slippers off before stamping their many feet... They were fairly new at all this scary stuff but were quick to learn. They wanted to be in charge of the room, that would be enough to start with.
The Skeletons knew that as soon as someone posted on Bloodbook about the changes in leadership of the room that it would be a free-for-all. They tried to hold back the Bumps but it wasn't easy. Luckily Joe had made it back with Sarah and Michelle who ran up the stairs avoiding the slippery bits. Joe wasn't so lucky and slipped and bounced hitting every step on the way down, his shriek was heard throughout the house. He didn't live long enough to know that he'd had a soft landing.
There was a bowl of something near the skirting board which smelled rather mouldy. When Joe arrived at the edge of the bowl he started transforming.. slowly melting but not before the bowl had tipped slightly spraying some of the contents over the spiders who carried the liquid on their backs throughout the house.  Patrick Bump thought maybe it was one of those casseroles Things left after one of their chaps had died. The bowl was carried back into the Spanish chest and shared out.

The creatures under the bed had evolved to being much flatter than before.. keeping their long arms sharpened ready to catch unweary ankles. They had seen more than the usual amount of dripping red stuff and knew how difficult is was to get the stains out. This is Gerald and it was going to be up to him to gather the rest of his family who were living in the attic overlooking the lake (Yes that lake (yikes!)) They needed backup to keep a look-out whilst they moved into the gap between the wardrobe and the carpet as the mattress was now so soggy that stuff was dripping into their evening meal.
Leigh had sent a note saying she would be there as soon as possible with popcorn if she managed to get past the evil couch on the porch.. the couch last seen swallowing the carol singers last Christmas. Chuckles entered the cleaning cupboard and sniffed the fetid air. She was sure she detected the stench of broccoli but knew that just could not be. The gloopy liquid glistened in the jar as she upended it into her bucket and small irregular bubbles covered the surface of the grey contents.

Chuckles the Handy-Creep had been hard at work. She had brought her cleaning rats with her and jars of the stuff the Crime Scene Cleanup Crews use but there was so much blood. As she cleaned an area so more blood appeared... almost seeping up through the floor. One of the rats (Joe) who was more used to these situations set out to gather supplies. He stopped off at Lyneen's cottage for a snack. Vern had dropped in with a basket of the most wonderful cupcakes which she surreptitiously  moved from table to chair away from dirty whiskers. Lyneen offered the rest of the potion left over from last year's battle which the were-rabbit had left in her shed.. hoping it would help if the cleaning potion was more of an XL size. The two Susan's agreed to add vegetables to the XL potion just to make it go further and snuck in the cleaning cupboard to add it to all the cleaning products without reading the instructions to just use two drops per gallon.
Back in the sleeping room Chuckles was gradually getting rid of the DB's (Dust Bunnies) by shining magnifying lenses onto them and watching them smoulder and not in a good way.
Who would look at those grey washed out furballs, who would give them names? Does anyone name their dustbunnies now-a-days or even admit to having them? The sleepers didn't even mind them scurrying around the floor.. didn't even try to hoover them up. In fact, after Mary's last visit there seemed to be more (perhaps it wasn't going to be so easy for Thumps, Bumps etc to take over the sleeping room) and the Peck's book of Beasts had been found in her attic!
And yet the DB's were the deadliest creatures of the sleeping room and the Handy-Creep was slowly getting rid..

The dust bunnies were getting quite angry. They had kept the peace in the sleeping room for the last 200 years. But now it seemed there was a change coming.
They had made sure that the creatures under the bed were managing ok with divans. (Honestly who thought up the idea of having the base of the bed so close to the carpet.)
The thing in the cupboard had originally agreed to only appear Monday to Friday but now was not just scaring the sleepers but also the cleaner and a burglar or two and was more out of the cupboard than in..
But they  had made the mistake of paying a Handy-Creep to make some repairs. She had been very industrious and had not only oiled the floor near the top of the stairs but had also oiled the hinges on the cupboard, the latches on the window and the door handle. She knew she had to work hard with a business start-up grant and had hoped to get further work when the accidents started happening..
