Day 31 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background The lake House and One Ghostly Night
for Mischief Circus
The loudest shriek came from within the old Boat House.. it went on and on without pause. Certainly the most terrifying sound, chilling the bones of anyone who heard -  then nothing. Absolute silence. Sam rolled to the left away from the Harvester, jumped up and ran to the Boat House. He clawed at the door and dragged it open. Inside all was still. Slowly and silently the mice crept in and ran along the side of the old boards and buckets. They scampered over the bones of their loved ones unsure of their safety and sent back a message. Sam kept to the shadows as he tried to miss the creaking board just inside the door. The voles climbed up to the window which had been splattered with blood and tried to peer in. The Pumpkin Demon stood beside a large box which was dripping blood. He had waited until the Banshee had started shrieking and had cut off her head. It was the only way to silence the creature for one cannot kill that which is not alive.
The bats were still unsure whether or not to roost in the old Lake house as every now and then the box rocked a bit. The survivors were still skittish after so many losses and they had to work together to rebuild their dens and nests. The Troll sisters were missed (the goats didn't miss them at all) and Kevin invited Tipsy to join him, Fifi and the skeletons for Sunday dinner. All should be fairly quiet the day after Halloween. Work will begin on clearing all the salt away so the fish and the little rats could come home. The best way would be to boil the water in the lake so arrangements will have to be made to visit a coven to buy some spells.

Day 30 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background The Lake House and Special Effects 2 and 3
for Mischief Circus
The Banshee was waiting. Her simpering sisters were still loved for their wailing at gravesides and the sorrow they showed when a human was in mortal danger. Sandra was a modern Banshee.. she preferred to be the cause of their anguish not to just wait and squeak.
The day started early. Several Pumpkin heads had grouped together in their tribes and lay in wait. One would need to sacrifice himself, to take one for the team. Sam had agreed to put himself in danger and laid as still as he could among the vegetable pumpkins ready to be harvested. If he timed it right he would escape the jaws of death otherwise known as a Harvester but he had to stay just as long as possible.. until his very life was in danger and then just a little while longer. Sam prepared himself and dug in. And waited. He heard the rumble and the ground beneath him began to shake just ever so slightly, he waited just a little longer until leaves from the pumpkin in front of him started shredding.. Then... the screaming started and ears started bleeding.

Day 29 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Lake House and Sirens

Early in the morning Nan drove the truck with a huge tank ready to collect any remaining fish. The spell made sure no fish would be left stranded in the lake. A portal opened to allow the fish and any of the smaller rats to travel into the tank without drying out. Then the truck was driven to a safe distance and Nan ran back to take up her place by the bull-rushes. Donna and Leigh started spreading salt around the edges of the lake so that nothing would escape. The Warlock was ready. He had filled up his broom saddlebags with salt crystals and rose silently into the dawn sky. Everything was quiet by the lake. The Zombies had arrived with the Trolls and helped throw more bags of salt into the now roiling waters. The inhabitant of the lake rose up and grabbed the Troll sisters and dragged them to their deaths. Before anyone could react the Executioner became entangled in the tentacles and managed to cleave three of them before throwing his stash of salt into the cut edges which foamed and fizzled. As he dropped back to the ground he hit the ground running... warning everyone to keep back away from the lake edges. A catapult set up by the witches managed to throw it's load almost into the middle of the lake then everything seemed to happen at once. Screams could be heard from the other side of the lake as Kevin the elf was dragged under. Tipsy caught hold of his flailing arm and Fifi ran along it to safety. One last tug and Kevin shot out of the water.. very bedraggled but alive. A cheer went up from the skeletons as Kevin had promised to cook for them next Monday.  The Warlock started dropping salt bombs and from the lake side the rats and bats joined in throwing the deadly salt. The Warlock was flying lower than he would have dared normally. He was being chased by the now rather shriveled Entity when he slammed on his brakes and the Entity passed him by. The Warlock now had the creature in his sights and gave a final flourish with both his wand and the last of the salt and the Entity burst into flames.

Halloween Hop Day 28

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Alchemist
for Mischief Circus
Spells had been cast and favours called in. The Professor had managed to conjure up the Bayou Witch in time to make the final spells. Nan and Donna had whitened fingers from all the salt they had prepared. Lyneen and Susan had helped Kevin the Elf to fill cauldrons with the salty solution. All along the lakeside (Not anywhere near the Lake house) the animals were ready. Tipsy was going to prevent whatever was in the lake from getting to safety. It was imperative that what was in the lake stayed in the lake. They would only have the one chance to change the salinity for if something lived and breathed and ate in an alkaline atmosphere then if the salt content suddenly shot up perhaps all would change.  The snails asked to be excused from actually working with the salt and that was understandable. They kept watch in case the tenant of the Lake House decided to join in. The ghouls had collected the trolls and their wheelbarrows of rock salt and they made their way to the raised pipeline that the remaining bunnies and rats had built. The rats were quite used to pipelines and had managed to collect quite a few drainpipes from surrounding buildings.. they just needed a few spells to join them together and to fill them with salt. They made sure that Tipsy sat on the end of the pipe blocking it until the Warlock was ready.

Day 27 Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background
Welcome to my Nightmare
for Mischief Circus

This is the alley you have been warned about as in 'I wouldn't like to meet him/her down a dark alley'.

The Executioner had heard about Sassy and had vowed to avenge her. He had sent word to the Pumpkin Patch. A call to arms for the coming battle. Some of the Pumpkin heads didn't look that scary but when the need arose they would be ready. Also the younger looking witches.. they were already angry at the 'Youth' spell backfiring and making them look about 12. Freda said the spell had been read backwards and she should be 21.. now how were they going to get served in the pub? R.S.V.P.'s had been answered and the ladies were getting ready. Nan and Donna had boxes of salt and bags and heaps of salt ready by the lakeside. Mary and Squiddy had rounded up several Nanny's who brought their Tardis-like handbags. Susan and Leigh had already hung out two washes, made sandwiches and tea for everyone and prepared themselves for attack. The surviving rats gathered in the Ghouls attic mending tails and patching the bats wings. Damien spent what was to be his last day on earth opening those tiny bags of salt. Don't forget ladies.. wear comfortable shoes and big girl knickers.

Day 26 Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Just because he has jingle bells on his collar does not mean he should be unemployed during Halloween. Kevin is monitoring the snake population at the Cemetery and when asked which species had survived he was able to say, with confidence, Red and Gold ones and Green ones. The skeleton had been residing there for  decades and had seen entities come and go but this was the first time the snakes had left. Kevin the Elf was trying to keep his rats safe but it did not help matters when Fifi popped up from where he was hiding on Kevin's hat and pointed to the skeleton saying something to the effect of 'He could do with a good dinner' Kevin had heard that the giant slug was no more (huge thanks to Squiddy and her hooker comments- great right hook) and he had found a load of rock salt behind the council offices and had a digger ready to collect huge amounts. He would be the Warlocks wing man. He had watched Top Gun enough times to know how to put on the brakes and let the bad guy fly on by. This will be his finest moment.

Day 25 Halloween Hop

Autumn Window skulls
by Rick St. Dennis

News had started filtering through the town. The local Coven were alerting their members and this lady was not going to put up with any nonsense. She would send that giant slug back down to the sewers without even chipping her nails. She may look genteel but she is one strong, broom wielding, spell casting, mesmerizing Nanny.  She had been chosen to protect the Dream Store.. this would be a safe haven for any of the less experienced witches and perhaps elves who needed a freshen-up before diving into the battle once more. She was stocking up on skulls (With or without brains) extra eyeballs, bones of every size and sundry herbs and spices yet still being able to wait outside watching down the street for any warning fires. With a sigh of relief the townsfolk knew their slug problem would be no more!

Day 24 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Abandoned
for Mischief Circus
The Roadkill Cafe opened it's doors for the evening trade. Usually, being situated between the lake and the Cemetery kept the staff busy with walk-ins. Tonight the Chef was a bit concerned. No rabbits or rats were on the menu not even dogs or bats. Either they were being extra careful crossing the road or something was clearing up their bits and pieces. Igor the waiter kept a look out by the back door for anything rooting around the bins.. nothing. You would have thought a CSI clean up crew had been round. No bits of yesterday's meals, no mice, nothing. Goodness knows what Chef would be serving tonight. Maybe a zombie would lend a hand or perhaps there would be some of the Ghoul's leg in the freezer..those rats never did call back for payment. And where on earth had all the salt vanished to?

Day 23 of the Halloween Hop

Slug
by Rick St. Dennis
Background
for Mischief Circus

In the town the drains started to bubble... and when each bubble popped a sickly sweet scent drifted along the pavement. The smell was sometimes revolting and then at the same time wonderfully aromatic. After one wave of bubbles gently drifted off on the breeze something started emerging from the main drain. The drain cover was only about six inches square and just made the slightest 'pop' as it came loose. A squishy violet blob started to poke against the underside of the drain, slowly emerging and stretching.. As it oozed out of the drain it seemed to grow and almost fit into the alley from wall to wall. It was preternatural, dripping slime and gore as it licked the bricks hungrily. If it managed to get to the lake all hope may be lost, the townsfolk were terrified. There was no more salt to be found, all had been collected ready to defeat the being in the lake. Can anyone out there banish the slug?

Ether Bunny
by Rick St. Dennis

for Mischief Circus

Tipsy had made her way back to the witch's shack. She squirmed through the elf door and made her way to the cupboard. The bottle was just a bit tricky to open with paws and as she held it up to her mouth she drank more than she should have. All of a sudden her fluff didn't fit. Everything was getting stretched way beyond snug. Tipsy had to loosen her ribbon as she grew from kit size to witch size and suddenly she filled the room. As she clattered towards the door she collected an axe and the witch's chickens and ducks. No one was going to mess with her bunnies! Tipsy also dragged the biggest sack of salt she had ever seen all the way to the ghoul's house even stopping off at sundry fast food outlets just to stock up on more tiny packets... that was why she had brought the chickens. They would be quite happy to sit with Nan and rip the packets open.. they only hoped they would be in time. They had heard of strange goings on in an alley way near the Tea Shoppe.

Day 21 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Lake House
for Mischief Circus
Tipsy and the witch (In disguise) lined up behind the slime line made by the snails and waited for the signal.
The Challenge was about to take place . Donna kept an eye on things and offered to referee proceedings .. she was not at all convinced that there would be a fair race.  Gary had been up since first frogs croak and had ran as fast as the wind round the lake. Not the way which would take him past the boathouse but the other way.. past the graveyard. He ran till his toes burned with his powdered bobtail sticking straight out. He ran like his life depended upon it.. ran to save Bunny kind. Gary ended up in the bullrushes where he re-fluffed his cheeks and checked his bobtail.. he had to shake a bit of bullrush fluff onto it to make up for the lack of powder. Then he stood in amongst the Rosebay Willowherb with his powdered tail pointing towards the lake and waited. A fox scream started the race and immediately Tipsy jumped backwards behind a rock. The witch saw Tipsy jump and grabbed her broom and kicked off the ground. Suddenly ahead she saw Tipsy in the middle of the lake. How on earth did that happen? Of course what she didn't see was Pippa still on the bank.. all she saw was a reflection in the mirror and screamed as she skimmed over the water seeing Gary on the far bank who she thought was Tipsy. No fluffy eared little bunny was going to show her up. Then quicker than suddenly everything stopped. The witch was just a little confused and wet. Why was she wet? And why couldn't she breathe. And why wasn't she anything at all. Something slapped against the lake surface and dragged the witch under and just spat out her broom.

The bunnies lives were in danger. Tipsy made sure that Pippa was waiting in line opposite a piece of broken mirror but still crouched down. They checked that Gary was on the other side of the lake.. they could barely make out his shape but trusted that he hadn't muddied up his little bobtail. Tipsy then visited the old shack. She had never felt so scared in her life..Bunnykind were relying on her and it made her ears twitch! Tipsy put on her bravest face and knocked on the door and tried not to jump when the door slammed against the wall as the witch opened it so quickly hoping to frighten anyone who dared to disturb her morning cocoa. It almost worked but Tipsy was feeling lucky. She had, of course, four lucky rabbit feet! Tipsy challenged Willaworm to a race straight across the lake in exchange for a potion to save the lake rabbits. They discussed terms and conditions and Tipsy watched through the elf window (one quite close to the ground) whilst the witch made up a potion and made a mental note where it would be kept whilst the race was on. All was ready.

by Rick St. Dennis

The snails had been mutated simply by eating some leaves growing by the lake side. Cassy and her sister snails had burst out of their shells and felt very vulnerable waiting for their shells to grow back.. oh boy were those birds going to get a shock when they landed for their breakfast! Plus.. if anyone mentioned garlic butter there would be trouble. Big Trouble! As the snails grew they tipped over the rocks hiding them and emerged transformed! They were ready. Job offers started coming in. A slug inquired about holiday lets and a Bream (A British freshwater fish) apologised for having lunched on several snails every day for the past month. Luckily it hadn't bothered Cassy at all..in fact the Bream and the snails sat down for a friendly chat about the best recipes for slime. Tipsy arranged for the snails to create a slime line at the start of the race.

Day 18 Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Mice
for Mischief Circus
Back at the lake all was still. No-one knew if the messages had reached the town. The rabbits were skittish and hopping over each other in panic. They knew that they would be considered tasty therefore worth sacrificing. Tipsy Bunny was not going to let that happen. The rest of the kits in her family relied on her to keep them safe and no-one was going to nibble on a bunny if she had anything to do with it! Tipsy needed a potion and the only way she would get one would be to challenge a witch and force her hand. Luckily Tipsy didn't look a threat to anyone let alone a witch of the Lake. On the morning of the challenge Tipsy made sure she looked sweet. She fluffed up her cheeks and powdered her bobtail. She borrowed the prettiest ribbons and had the rest of the kits ready. Pippa Bunny dressed exactly the same as Tipsy.. same fluffed up cheeks, same powdered bobtail same ribbons. Gary Bunny was in a strop. He had his cheeks fluffed.. his bobtail powdered. Gary hated ******** ribbons!

by Rick St. Dennis
Background

The postal bees arrived at the Insane Mr Hare's Teashoppe. Lyneen had prepared a large bowl of honey ready for their arrival so that they could have a snack before passing the message on. Now came the tricky bit. Each Bee had been part of the message and they now had to get into message formation (As opposed to arrow formation) They all had a tune to hum.. they were well practiced and could harmonise perfectly. As each Bee knew when to hum so they knew where their place was in the formation. Once they were in formation the message could be read. Bert wasn't included in the final hum.. his stutter put them all off, instead he was given the job of reading the message and checking all were in the right places. Bert was a clever Bee, one of the best. Sally listened in horror at the plight of the lake fauna. She wrote down the message and lit a fire beacon. She also collected salt from all her neighbours and began a spell which would condense the salt into a more manageable form.

Day 16 Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Welcome to my nightmare
for Mischief Circus
As they passed by Hannah's house they told her what was waiting down by the lakeside and a warning fire was lit,. A message passed on so quickly from tower to tower along the village road. The sight of the burning fire towers alerted the Warlock who collected his super charged sports broom from the pantry, two potion bags, a first aid kit and a sandwich. He sat astride his broom, checking the landing lights were on for later, and kicked off into the humid air ready to rescue his beloved. He then remembered he had his phone with him so rang her and heard a rather garbled message on her answer phone. Something about bats, trolls and Don't be late for dinner. He also received a message about a serious lack of salt, or at least that was what it sounded like. Hannah had asked Donna to organise a collection which Nan managed to cram inside her backpack as she sped across the field towards the ghouls house making sure she didn't step in any puddles. We all know what lives in puddles!

Haunted Outhouse and Executioner 2
by Rick St. Dennis
Background Welcome to my Nightmare

They trundled by a spooky old loo collecting a retired executioner on the way. It was lucky that at his retirement 'do' they let him keep his lucky axe... even tying a ribbon round the sharp bit. Billy (The axe man) agreed to most of the terms of employment but with his own clause.. two be-headings would be added to the contract without extra charge. Billy knew he would stand shoulder with Damien when the time came to rid the lake of the Entity within. It should be made clear at this point...this is not The Executioner but An Executioner. Just as handy with an axe but not the love interest in this tale of woe. He knew from past experience roughly how to defeat an Entity. It would have something to do with salt, and a lot of it. He knew it was no good asking the snails, they were dead set against the stuff..the same went for the slugs which had mysteriously disappeared from Billy's geraniums. Billy posted a request online for as much salt as folk could spare. Ho hum..chips in the local cafe would never be the same again.

Day 14 of the halloween hop

Background Abandoned for Mischief Circus

The Trolls had just finished second breakfast which should not be confused with brunch or even an early lunch as the two breakfasts merged almost as one yet with subtle differences. This was possibly the best time to knock on the skull postbox to attract the attention of Jenny-the smallest Troll as she wouldn't be looking for her next meal just yet. Unfortunately she did stand on two of the mice
(which Squiddy had dug up having previously buried them in her garden) before she noticed them and bent down and plucked their remains from between her toes and nibbled on them as she gazed rather confused, at the zombies in her garden. Jenny grunted a greeting as her beffudled mind struggled to cope with the mice hanging onto the dragonflies feet and the zombies wandering around the patio and weeing in the flower tubs... also, somehow so many guests for lunch. She started opening cupboards for extra chianti nouveau (The one with a hint of graveyard and a blood bouquet)
The Trolls agreed payment and started shuffling fairly slowly towards the lake following the same road as the goats whose scent lay heavy in the late morning sunshine. Jenny said it was just like having a 'take away' delivered and you couldn't get fresher than on the hoof.

Evil Goat and Goat
by Rick St. Dennis

Two of the zombies stumbled along behind the mice just to make sure the mice wouldn't be stood on.. well that was the idea but the speed those little mice ran at (even slowing down for wee's every inch) they were out of sight even before the zombies reached the porch. The mice then scattered so as to present a less than tight target.. they didn't know who to trust and just needed to get to the caves before Troll lunch time. It wasn't worth the risk, just in case the Trolls were on a slimming program... and had gone off goats preferring to snack on mice.. They had passed some goats with their belongings in checked bundles tied to sticks who told the mice they were looking for a vacant bridge. The goats had had enough! The trolls had been charging everyone who wanted to pass over the bridge. And what right did they have to call out anything about Billy Goat Gruff? The goats had read their comments on Bloodbook (If you remember from last year, it's like Facebook but messier) Nobody like being trolled and to be trolled by actual trolls was just bang out of order!

The bats agreed to all work together. The Lake bats were still mourning their lost brothers and the Village Bats swore an oath that they would fly side by side with the Lake Bats till their loss was avenged. The same went for the Rats. They stood ready for battle in the Attic keeping watch over the access to the lakeside... hearing shrieks so terrifying that they could barely wait for re-enforcements and Lyneen to arrive. The wonderful Lady of the Attic trained them for battle, giving power to their legs and wings. It was decided that the Trolls were needed to protect the ghouls house. If the Trolls could be persuaded to leave their caves they would be housed in the cellar. A light and a fridge would be all they needed, oh... and a supply of goats. The light and the fridge weren't a problem but the goats were not happy about the situation one little bit and tried to make a vegetarian option also offering a quantity of their own cheese.. Some spare mice set off to speak to the Trolls.. they would be fairly safe as Trolls didn't mice, they got stuck in their teeth.

Day 11 of the Halloween Hop

by Rick St. Dennis
Background Lake House
for Mischief Circus
On the approach to the dwellings they found a disemboweled body chained to a stake. A normal signpost for Ghouls.
The first house they came to belonged to a ghoul who only agreed to allow them in if the rats were made to promise not to gnaw on his remaining leg. He had every right to complain as last Winter a group of Rats had found their way in through a cellar window and had chewed off his left leg whilst he slept and without him noticing. The leader of the teen gang of Water Rats stated.. with much bristling of whiskers.. that they were, in deed Water Rats and that the culprits were Sewer Rats. Different colours, different tails. Discussions went on through the morning and it was decided that this house would be given full security systems as this would be the last stop for the witches before the lake. Mr Hare started on the loft conversion which really only consisted of the removal of several tiles in strategic places for the bats to gain access.. that was of course if the Village bats would join forces with the remaining Lake Bats. Mr Hare wrote a note to be taken to The Insane Mr Hare which hopefully would give him all the information as to what had happened at the Lake. The note was given to a swarm of Postal Bees who left the house in an arrow formation.
